Direct-to-Film (DTF transfers) have become one of the most popular methods for creating vibrant, durable designs on apparel. Whether you’re customizing t-shirts, hoodies, or tote bags, learning how to properly press DTF transfers is key to achieving long-lasting results. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process step by step.

What You’ll Need:

  • DTF transfer
  • Heat press
  • Blank garment (cotton, polyester, blends, etc.)
  • Parchment paper or Teflon sheet

Step 1: Prep Your Heat Press

Set your heat press to 300–325°F, depending on the type of fabric.  Adjust the pressure to medium to high. Always let your press fully heat up before starting.

Step 2: Position Your Garment

Lay your blank garment flat on the press. Pre-press for 3–5 seconds to remove wrinkles and moisture. This helps the transfer adhere smoothly.

Step 3: Place the Transfer

Position your DTF transfer on the garment with the printed side (white adhesive side) facing down and the film on top.

Step 4: Press the Transfer

Cover the design with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet to protect the heatpress. Press for 8-10 seconds with medium to high pressure. Consistent heat, time and pressure are crucial for a good bond.

Step 5: Peel the Film

Gently peel away the film backing, starting from one corner. If part of the design lifts, press again with a bit more pressure.

Step 6: Finish the Press

For a softer finish and extra durability, cover the design again with parchment or Teflon and press for an additional 5 seconds. This helps lock in the ink.  We purchased our Teflon sheets from Amazon.

  • Textured finish: Use textured finishing sheet
  • Matte finish: Use Kraft paper

Pro Tips:

  • Always check the recommended temperature, time and pressure for the type of fabric.
  • Test a small design first if you’re using a new garment type.
  • Polyester fabric - pay close attention to the recommended temperature and time to avoid ink migration.
  • If you’re new to DTF designs or using a heat press, run both a press and wash test to ensure the design stays on the fabric.
  • Pressing designs with thin lines - cold peel, slowly and carefully.
